What is the down fall of learning on your own?I am sure there have been many many pilots that have been self taught.

I think the biggest downfall is what might happen to your wallet.
Repair and replacement can get costly and your likelihood of needing one or both is greater when you go it alone. It's not impossible, but certainly more expensive.
