I don't of anything intended for this use, but I have seen and look forward to trying a- geez, how do I explain it...

At a sewing store, I saw a tool with a wheel on it, and the wheel had points. Kind of like a 1/4 scale pizza cutter, but again the wheel has points on it. Wheel maybe was 1 inch in diameter and had maybe 20 points around the circumference.

You could use this tool to imprint marks on the surface, or perhaps rig it with paint to gently apply dots. Also, the spacing is fixed, but there must be different makes/models of this tool around which would have varying "point" spacings.
