I believe the lighter airplane allows a greater speed range
That is undisputed---but a narrower speed range can be easier to control---and the nearer a model can be flown to a constant speed,through most of the schedule manouevres,the easier it is to attain geometrical accuracy.
Have a look at the CPLR F07 at the recent Europeans for a good example.
