I'll try to get hold of him and maybe see if I can get a similar system working on the petrol motor. I did some digging and found an article where Gary Baldwin had done some experimentation on variable length systems. His system seemed linked to throttle position.

I think if the control can be good and close coupled to RPM, and responsive enough, then gains could perhaps be made.
