From my experience Gas-Glow likes higher compression engines.
This is where the 10/10 mixture comes up a little short.
I just came across a 20/10 glow fuel.

I believe on low compression motors this will give much better idle and transition
I have used 20/20 fuel with good results on a 32cc Mac. With the proper oil content it should be even better.
As far as starting backwards I've been told that is from being too rich.
I have to admit that I almost always use a starter.
A Sullivan on 24volts does a nice job. It's quick easy and even spins a ST-3250 set up as a Davis Diesel.
