RE: Yellow P-38 build thread
engine mount (cont)
pic 1:
I rotated the engine about 15 degrees to get the carb inside the cowl.
The plane is sitting on its tail so gravity makes this job much easier.
pic 2:
After putting the cowl on (which fits perfectly on the booms), I centered the engine shaft in the middle of the cowl.
pic 3:
I then carefully removed the cowl and marked where the engine standoffs meet the fire wall.
I then removed the engine and marked the center of the circles from outlining the standoffs and centered punched them.
I drilled 1/8" pilot holes: then 5/16" holes in the fire wall.
I also had to use a forstner bit to make a shallow hole for the back of the engine shaft (which is longer than the 1 1/16" standoffs).
pic 4/5:
I then used the same size 5/16 X 3/4" long bolts with flat washers and locking washers and bolted the standoffs to the fire wall from inside the boom. I used my auto tools to reach the long distance to secure the bolts. The opening in the back of the boom is large enough to allow your hand in there to hand start the bolts into the standoffs.

all done with one!
