I actually found a rotary carb laying around today, from my son's scooter (sorry son). I removed the two screws and pulled the lower part out, you can pull the spring out of its slot with a small screwdriver or knife blade. Instead of trying to cut a new hole for the spring, I'm thinking just cut the tang off with a dremel tool.
