Have not built the SE5 but have done the Spitfire and have started the Hurricane.

It makes sense to cut the longerons to allow them to curve in to the rear. I assume the cut will be on the inside of the curve (and made with a razor saw or similar), once you have pulled the rear together your cut will close up and a drop of thin cyano on the spot should restore almost full strength.
