Default RE: Painting plastic rims

ORIGINAL: MITCH ..

so after you use oven cleaner to remove chrome and there white you use ( (rit clothing dye) ) this brand/type correct?

do you need to add water or anything and where do you get the dye also is the oven cleaner a certain brand or just any type will do

I want to try this out today on a set of hpi tremor rims
Oven cleaner, any of the brandss/kinds that don't require that the oven be preheated.
Use with caution - wear rubber gloves, lots of ventalation, etc.
Wash the rims throughly when done

Yes, Rit clothing dye. In the States any grocery store carries it as does WalMart, K-Mart, etc.
Mix it per the instructions. Put in the rims (after cleaning them well). Check them every 15 minutes or so untill they reach the color you want - I can tell you from personal experence that it's a bad idea to take a nap during this stage. When the get where you want take them out, give them a quick rinse and let them dry - done.

azzman,
You make it sound like if you paint any plastic part the truck will look like "Towmater" after a run or two. That's just not true. Most of the plastic parts of these truck don't get very much surface contact. The rims I've painted still look great over a year later. I agree that you may not want to paint skid plates or bumpers but stuff like shock towers, radio boxes, etc don't take the abuse those parts do. And if you do the proper prep work (cleaning, sanding, etc) they will look fine for a long time.
Not trying to offend, just saying that untill you actually try it you shouldn't be quite so hard on the idea.
