The old school method of separating backing material from an adhesive covering is using two small pieces of masking tape - Put these two pieces of tape in identical locations on opposite sides of what you want to separate and simply pull the two pieces of tape apart and thus the backing from the covering. I'm making it sound more complicated than it really is...

Much better than messing around trying to separate with a knife or using fingernails.
