I can't say I had enough experience with non-scale bi-planes to know the answer to your question about the size of the wheels. The method I used seemed to work well with scale models . The one time it didn't was with a giant scale Ryan PT-20 which was terribly nose heavy by my method. When I used the CG from the real plane (38% of the cord, which I thought would be terribly off) it worked fine., But that was a mono-plane.
I have no areodynamics behind my method. Just more trial and failure stuff
