The 6V battery he is using is very likely a higher capacity (mah) than the 7.2V replaced, so battery life extention is possible.
I checked in Maplin (kinda British equivalent of Radio Shack) this afternoon and they've got 6v rechargeables up to 12000mah, so thats where the extended life would be coming from I guess
