RE: SECRETS OF THE MINI ULTRA STICK
Wow, excellent article, Doc! I'm always impressed with your detailed reviews and this one is no exception - great job! Like you, I'm a great fan of the MUS and heartily agree that the Park 480 is a terrific match for it. Your write on the cooling mod cannot be more timely.
Just this past weekend - it hit 90F in NJ and I was flying my 480 powered MUS as usual - which is always a welcome diversion from my other noisy glow birds. There was little or no wind - so I increased the throws and was practicing hovering with the light little stick. The plane is so light that even with a 11x7 APC-E, it hovers easily with only half throttle. About 6 minutes in, the motor cut out - which was strange as I know I won't hit LVC until at least 15 minutes. As with all dead-sticks with the MUS, gliding it in was really easy. On the ground, the motor came back and I realized that it was a thermal cutoff - a first time for me.
The E-Flite 40A V2 ESC was so hot that the black PVC covering over the FETs has completely melted off! It works fine when cool, so I'm going to continue to use it -sans covering. I had mounted it on the side of the bulkhead next to the battery. Apparently, this position does not provide adequate cooling. I was thinking of mounting it in the exterior of the plane on the underside of the bulkhead. Now your article on the air scoop has me wondering if I should do it your way - it certainly looks more clean. You mounted your ESC just under the battery tray - don't you think that the battery obstructs quite a bit of airflow over the ESC?
