Default Correct way to Robart Hinge?

Just finishing the control surface hinging on a jet and was wanting to check if there are any specific ways to position these hinges.

Looking at the kits plans some drawings show the whole hinge 'knuckle' seated in the cut out on the leading edge, with the pivot point of the hinge in line with the recessed plane, whilst others show the hinge pivot point in line with the leading edge.

In the two pictures below of an aileron which is the correct position? if neither please describe. Are the position of these hinges subject to the surface being controlled? I ask because the flaps seem to require a slightly different position, as the movement is restricted to down only.

Any advise greatly appreciated.
