Most people in the States use a pistol grip controler for land based vehicles. And use stick type controlers for planes/helis. A pistol grip with the steering wheel seems more intuitive than a stick for controling direction. Also, since land vehicles usually only need 2 or 3 channels the complexity of stick controlers is not needed.
I understand that stick controlers are more popular in Europe.
