Default Balancing w/ strings and a plumbob

Hey Guys,
I've seen it set up where a string is tied around the nose, string goes up to a hook on the ceiling and back down and tied to the tail. The plumbob is set at the hook at the ceiling and hangs down to the top of the fuse. Now do I set the pitch attitude of the jet to "0" pitch/incidence and read where the plumbob points (CG)?
Is there a ballpark recommended distance from the plane to the hook vertically?

Is there any link at all to this method of locating a CG with a diagram??
Any help would be a big hit. Jet is a JL hawk to be balanced.

Thanks guys,
Mike
