Simon,
I would consider picking up a Graupner 700 8.4v BB motor and a flex cable, .150 with 3/16 prop shaft over a straight shaft. Then use a 3/16" strut. The prop center line should be close to the bottom of the rear ride pads or even slightly below/above. You may angle the prop slight downwards. Start with an Octura X440. Water cool the can and brushes on the motor.
On 12 cells, you should be around 25mph.

Thanks for the input. I will most likely end up with that setup after I have tinkered and played with a few other low-cost or even free-set ups. I have a box of cordless drill motors that I will play with and can make my own shaft/stuffing sets. Rudders etc are about an hour of cutting and filing. If I can get one of these hulls for a good price then i should be able to at least get it running half o.k for less than $50. I never count in the cost of esc, cells and radio gear as all of that is easily transferable to my other boats.
On another note it is very amusing to see some of the flaming that goes on. I personaly think that these modded boats should be kept here in the SE section as they are what may help some people get into FE. My wife would shoot me if payed $700+ for a '27 etc.
I like to tinker with and mod low cost boats and KNOW that they will NEVER run close to a BJ or 27. Those guys with the big fast boats have a LOT of knowledge and skill that I am here to tap into. If we all play nicely then we can all have fun.
Enough of that for now.
EDIT It looks like while I was typing
Taylor was
subtly pointing out the rules to
someone above.
