But the "recommended" way to do it is to discharge NiCd before storing. NiMH should be partial discharged before storing.
"Recommended" by who? Not one of the Ni-Cd manufacturers recommends this.
There are a lot of things the manufactorers do not mention... but we are allowed to find information in other ways.
I have learned that NiCd`s should be discharged before storing, learned this already back in the 70`ties and this is still true. This have worked perfect for me, and I have in fact 20 years old NiCd-batteries still working. Prove enough for me that I do it the right way. Don`t remember where I did read this 30 years ago, but I often find this confirmed on a lot of web-sites and books. If you are interested in some few hints:
- This is the recommendings in Gibbs Guides, which are guides with all the right answers. Recommended!
- And just a short searching on the web-sites of Schulse, which are top-of-the-line manufactorer of chargers and a lot of other gadgets say, in a VERY clear way that storing NiXX partial charged is a safe way to destroy the batteries. Those are people I rely 100% on, these are serious people. Do yourself a favor and go to this page:

Still in doubt?
No doubt in my mind after spending 25 years as Design and Application Manager with the leading manufacture of Ni-Cds. You store them discharged - no problem as it doesn't matter what the state of charge is since they will self discharge in 4 or 5 months anyway. I have not found that the manufacturers of battery chargers are the best source of information on batteries. They are more interesting in promoting some feature of their charger and make their recommendations fit what they want to sell.
