I have seen the flap/spoiler device you are looking for.
I am sure someone, somewhere has a copy of the original Curare plans showing how they were installed.
I did see Hanno fly in the 1983 Pensacola World Championships.
That was the year he flew the Calypso.
He had a different kind of braking device on that plane.
He had flat plates installed on the forward edge of the landing gear legs.
When the gear was extended, either fully or partially, these flat plates acted as air brakes.
He had them set so that on the downlines the gear only extended ever so slightly...just enough to expose the "brakes".
I think a Focus II with retracts would look cool!
I know I was impressed with the looks of Lance's plane in the air at the Nats this summer.
Just a thought....
