Actually no.. Hanno showed up with a 'Skybolt' in 1984 and was disqualified because it was really a 2-winged Dalotel. Lamar Steen (designer of the full scale Skybolt) himself was there and after looking at Hanno's airplane commented "That sure is a pretty airplane.. What is it?"
Steve Rojecki won that year flying a Reed Falcon biplane. Steve as you know went on to be the CD of the event for many years to follow and really made the TOC work IMO.
Hanno returned in 1988 to win the TOC (with an actual scale Skybolt) and then was not seen again in Las Vegas. Hanno had won basically ever TOC he every actually flew in.
Biplanes won the TOC from 1984 - 1992 but then that's no stretch.. nearly every competitor was flying Ultimate Bipes for awhile. Then in 1994 the bonus went away for bipes, and the BIG airplanes arrived, with Quique showing the world what would become "3D" flying.
