I normally recommend the Air Hogs Aero Ace series for indoor or backyard fun. Both the biplane and the pusher jet versions fly very well and are quite affordable. These are also available from Toys R Us.

I had a bad experience with an Estes Sky Ranger I bought at Wal-Mart (the yellow and purple one). It was only $19.99 and I'd read a good review of it, but the transmitter continued to drain the batteries dead even after it was switched off.

The XPV flying hybrids vary quite a bit in price and size, ranging from $19.99 up to $139.99, you might specify which one you are considering so you will get better feedback.
