Welcom back to RC. I recently did the same , was out of it for about 10 years and jumped back in full force lol. In the past month and a half I have bought 4 redcats. Monsoon and Hurricain to run at the Clermont track and I made a electric drifting lightning only to get a gas lightning a week later. So far I have not had any major problems at all (other than a drain on the bank account LOL).
With a 14 yr old son sounds like you need to get somthing for each of you and find the local track. My son and I did that for many years and we enjoyed it very much.
