Actual weight
Hi jemilheis,
>>Don't rule out a BME 44. Strong engine and very light. Mine is only 3lbs. 2oz with a J&A Pitts style muff.
BME 44s are excellent motors(I've had two), but as with any motor, make sure you're comparing apples to apples when you're comparing weights. As an example, ZDZs, FPEs, Taurus' and Brisons all come with engine mounts, so their bare weights include the mounts and the BME doesn't. The weight of the Hanger 9 mount used typically on this motor is 5.75 oz, so you're now up to 3lbs 7.75 oz + 4oz for the CH ignition and you're at 3lbs 11.75. That's actually an ounce lighter than what my BME's weighed. As this size engine goes, that is still light....relatively(only the FPE is lighter) The other motors mentioned above (including 50's) are only 2-5oz more(add another 3oz or so for the battery if you're comparing against a glow motor).
My only point is when you're deciding on which engine to put in this plane, make sure you're figuring the complete weight and not a manufacturer's bare weight, which can easily be 1lb lighter than the total package.
