On January 19, at approximately 1310 Atlantic standard time, a Hobbico Superstar .40 nonregistered homebuilt hybrid airplane, was damaged following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 15 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.
During a long training flight of flying the engine flamed out. The pilot declared mayday to Simón Pierre TWR and entered a shallow descending turn which terminated upon the right wingtip's impact with an earth berm W of the main runway, whereupon the plane executed two complete
flat pirouettes before coming to rest on its wheels. Despite the plane's gymnastic display damage was minor - limited to the vertical stab.
