Yes, there is a point to camping on site even if you do arrive Thursday, or even Friday. At night, there is lots of activities that are still taking place.
My real question here was if there would be any reasonable sites left by late Thursday night for a **tent**. If I'm going to end up pitched on a 45 degree angle on top of boulders, I'll just stick to the motel idea. Also, is there a problem getting into the site at say, 1am, if that's when we arrive?
