For break in you run all the shims then after break in that is what STS recommends. Yes you can increases compression but if you go to far you can hurt the engine. Just like using different glow plugs to adjust timing but once again if you do not know what to watch out for can cause engine problems. If you do not know what to look for best to go with what STS recommends.
