It seems like you have your priorities in order and I, for one, really look forward to the Albatros build.
Yes, ARF's have dominated the hobby in the last few years, but there are still a few of us who enjoy building. You may want to visit the "Scale" or "Scratch Building" forums also. Scroll through the list of forums to see if any blow your skirt up and talk to the guys.
Radios have also made a big leap in technology this year with the advent of 2.4GHz systems where no frequency pins are required. If you are going to get a new radio, a 2.4GHz system is worth looking into, however, they will not be compatable with any of your current receivers. If you have several FM receivers and you wish to continue to use them, by all means go with a standard 72MHz FM systems. They are far from obsolete.
