I have heard of people shipping thier airplane via ground a few days before flying to an event. A sturdy reuseable shipping crate could be built for that purpose. It would add some hassle and expense, but totally avoid the airline security issue. Chances for damage are probably about the same either way, and will depend a lot on how well the container protects the contents.
