A IR gun may work but it would have to be a high end one that goes to the temp he needs and has adjustable emessivity. What he really needs is a thermocouple probe and a readout device like a Fluke 51. There are many choices for both and this would give him the accuracy and range he needs. Nice to be working in the calibration field....
