the oil that was in the shocks looked like old motor oil or even the oil they use to machine parts with that they use to keep the drill bits cool.

Filling the shocks with thicker oil is always good and all the way to the top always helps. also you can put a piece of fuel tubing on the shaft, like an inch or less, this will also stop the shocks from bottoming out.
