Default Old time concept

I am working on a pylon racer from the past at present. The plans are poor condition, have errors in notations, etc. but is only thing available right now.

Question being is the plan shows what looks to be an offset engine centerline. The centerline of engine is off to the righthand side by about 1/8 inch. The engine has zero down thrust and zero right thrust. But back when this was brought up at the aerodynamics forum, the whole concept of offset engines was considered bulloney. Well comparing today's methods versus those of decades ago is it bulloney.

But, back about 1960- 70 was the offset engine one of the concepts then used to compensate for offset thrust?
