Ken, did you build the prototype or a production plane with a 100 and stock mufflers? Scratching my head on how to get the cowling on with the mufflers on as well as the igntion spark plugs without cutting the cowl ring on the bottom.
Mine are productions. Yes, cut the bottom of the cowl ring off. It's not needed and it will be fine.

I too have DA-100 with stock mufflers: I cut 1" off of the pipe to facilitate installing and removing the cowl. I have noticed no adverse effect from it, and the plane still stays very clean.
Next, I will replace the DA regular stock muffler with their compact mufflers: it will clear the cowl without cutting any hole at the bottom.
