Yes, each car must have a unit. Not intended for racing.
Here are (from memory) the differences:
Orion
- 60 laps memory
- can buy additional transponder
- can buy tripod for the receiving unit
- can buy PC link to store lap times
- transponder plugs into receiver or through y-harness
- newer technology
Lapboy
- 20 laps (I believe)
- uses 9V battery in the car
- comes with a printer. uses printing calculator paper found at any office supply (i.e. office depot)
- older technology than Orion
