Calvin, yeah, they should work. IF you can stretch them across the wing anyhow. If not, go to one of the office supply stores & you can get a bag of rubber bands for 75 cents.
Interesting day. Went out to fly. Lucky for me the recent snow was packed down by the dump trucks going down the road that I use for a runway. Took the super sporter, chipmunk & Vector with me. First up was the vector. Flew well. Kind of sqirrely, mostly cause of the throws. I had dialed in more expo on the elevator to tame it down some, that did help, but I should have added more to the ailerons. I had flow it for about 5 minutes of the 10 available, was coming around, wanted to do a low pass & wobbled the wings, over corrected & plowed it right into the ground. It's repairable, might take about 45 minutes of work, & will fly again.
Next up, Super sporter. Took off, no problem, flew nicely. Landing was prettyg ood as well, considering I had a 8mph cross wind from the east on my north south runway. Getting pretty good at this landing on wheels thing.
Next up, Chipmunk. Different set up than the last flight. The last flight was with a 13x6 APC prop (25 amps, 6 cell), this one was with a 13x7 Zinger wood prop (35 amps 6 cell). Also using different battery packs. I bought these huge 4000 mah 3 cell packs a short time ago. Really cheap, like $25 a shot on Ebay. Only downside to them, they are 5c discharge, yep, only 20amps continuous per pack. SO I was running all four of them. Heavy beasties, basically added a full pound of weight to the plane compared to using 4 of my 2200 packs. But the trade off was a flight time of about 16 minutes instead of 7 or 8. Oh, I forgot to mention, it was cold, not unbearably cold, but after standing still for 6 or 7 minutes, my hands would be frozen. I couldn't find the gloves I used last winter for flying & my other gloves are just oo thick to feel the stick. Anyhow, the roll rate was better with the dual aileron servo set-up compared to the single servo set up f the previous flight. Did notice a hard time accomplishing knife edges though.
I had set the timer on my radio for 14 minutes for this plane, but after a while of flying, my hands were getting pretty cold. SO I landed the plane, man, that extra weight made for a higher speed landing that really used up a very long stretch of runway, about 100 yards. Taxied the plane to the truck, left the packs & everything plugged in, & the TX on, sat in the truck for about 10 minutes warming up, occasionally running the plane in a circle on the ground to keep the battery packs warm. Got back out & flew again for another 4 or 5 minutes, just flying a pattern, then landing, turning around & taking off again. THe ground handling of the plane has improved A LOT with the mods since when I first tried flying it a year or two ago ( how long ago did I get that plane?). Anyhow, on my last landing attempt, the plane wandered off into some deeper snow. OOPS, Give it full rudder & down elevator to keep from nosing over & punch the throttle. It started to work & then it hit something in the snow. Plane nosed over & I saw the prop send peices flying. OOPS. OK, chipmunk grounded for the rest of the day. Hmm, that meant I still had the 2200 mah 3 cell packs to use for soemthign else.
Well, since I had crashed the vector & the Chipmunk was out of commission (why didn't I bring a spare prop?) ,, that left the Super Sporter. I still had a set of 5 cell packs for another flight with the sporter yet, so I wanted to use that first. I think one of those puffy yellow 5 cell packs is going bad cause I only had maybe 3 minutes of flying before the plane was going slow. It's ok though, those packs were replaced for free anyhow & they were on borrowed time.
Stuffed 4 of the 3 cell packs into the sporter, not a clue what I would be pulling for amps, but with it being cold & I was having fun I thought I would chance it & just set the radio timer for 4 minutes. OH MY GOD, on 6 cell, the Sporter is a totally different plane! Probably another 10 mph in speed, & climbs were crazy. I tried to keep it under or at 1/2 throttle but the inner moron had to do some full throttle high speed low passes. I'm thinking I need to go ahead & do some testing to see what I am pulling on 6 cell with that plane & just run it as a 6 cell set up, cause that was WAAAY FUN. It took off with less than 1/2 throttle. So, another reason that I'm ok with the puffy 5 cell pack starting to die. Makes me glad I have 6 more of those $20 2200 mah 3 cells coming.
ANyhow, fun day flying, went to my parents & watched part of the super bowl, mostly wanted to see the commercials. & then had to go into work for a couple hours. Had a sudden suprise snowstorm that dumped 7 inches on us in about 3 hours.
Oh, with the chipmunk, when I was towing it by its rudder back to the truck, I noticed something, the rudder was slightly loose. SO I'm going to dig into that and see about making that stiffer. That could be flexing under load and causing the poor knife edges.
