The Avistar by far is a better training plane. The Something Extra is a good plane, but it would definitely not be a beginner plane, it is not as forgiving as the Avistar and the control surfaces react MUCH faster than the trainer.

My opinion is that both you and your son will enjoy the experience alot more if you start with the Avistar.
