Gee,I hope your right and they aren't using a "poser" radio.I imagine if it is a half decent model the electronics can be upgraded?
You can always buy a used Skysport ( I still am not convinced you get a Skyport with that package) for around $25 any day of the week from Ebay. Here is an example:
