One side question... With the Saito 82 and probably a 14x4w or 15x4w prop, is a metal spinner going to be absolutely necessary or will a plastic one work well enough? I'll spring for the metal if necessary but I'd like to keep the weight down if possible. I'm not even opposed to just using a little corsair-style nub like I have on my OS 70 on my Ultra Stick 40.

Hey Eric, I dont think your question got answered so Ill give it a shot!

There is nothing that says a motor even has to have a spinner, much less an expensive spun aluminum one. If you want to run plastic, it will work just fine. Aluminum obviously holds up to the starter motor better. Most decent (re:not worn out) four strokes dont even need that. When properly tuned, a gentle back flip will have them running. Some guys just grab the spinner to do this. Also, you should be able to just lay your fingertip on the airfoil of the blade to back flip, dont hook it on the edge of the blade for obvious reasons. This way when the motor "catches" and spins forward, the tip of your finger just slides off the airfoil and you are not having to "time" your release of the blade. A (handicapped) buddy has a Surpass 70 on his UCanDO and when I start it for him, I litterally "throw" the prop backwards from the 12 oclock position and it fires like a dream. This "throw" means my finger has traveled about 1 inch within the prop disc and is long since clear of the prop disc when the prop bounces off 3 oclock and comes back.

All that being said......I run aluminum on everything

I bench ran a Saito 80 the other day that I got for a GP Ultimate. Ran a 15x4w and it pulled like a freight train, so if you have the clearance you may want to go even bigger with the newer 82. Ill bet dollars to donuts that 82 will float the valves with a 14x4w....I could be wrong, but you dont want that motor screaming in the RPM range that it will probably spin that prop.

Hope this helps...Shane

While were counting...I should have 6 to maiden here before long. They dont seem to go very fast till you realize that in a few weeks you will have MANY new planes Kudos to all!!!! Pics, planes, etc...everyone is gettin excited to get in the skies!
