Maximum demonstrated crosswind for the A319-320 is 33kts and 38kts with gusts. Weather reports there were for gusts up to 49kts. Not sure of the crosswind component, but obviously quite a bit. I have over 3000 hours in the A319-A320 and I can tell you that landing in a strong crosswind is always interesting. You ask the flight computers for something and you may or may not get the combination of flight control deflection (aileron / spoilers) that you really want. Now, tell the computers that you want to cross control (slip) to land in a crosswind and you are in for an interesting ride. But it does appear in this case, the wind was just too strong regardless of the flight control logic.
