RE: problem with negative pitch
I'd suggest that you pick up a pitch gauge asap. They can be found for $15 and it's a tool you should use everytime you replace the blades or feathering/spindle shaft.
As for the DX6, the radio is ok but the servos aren't that great. Not much better than the stock esky ones. I'd keep them as back up but remember that if you do replace one cyclic servo you need to replace them all. When you do use them it should be a pretty straight forward replacement. Just remember the locations of which servo plugs into which port (pitch will plug into aux1), gyro gain (single wire) into gear.
Make sure you have some zip ties and servo tape as well.
