Default RE: Questions about charging/cycling

ORIGINAL: stuball56

I have some question in reference to the Lipo storage/cycle procedures as quoted here by Jason@maxamps, all questions relate to MaxAmps Lipo pack 5000 3S and Hyperion 0606i ac/dc charger.

“The general rule is that for every 30 days a Li-Po sits it should be cycled at least once during this time period. We have all learned that storing them at half of the packs capacity is now the norm, but you also need to cycle them. Take the pack charge it up to full then discharge to 20% and then charge back to 50%. Doing this at least once every 30 days will help ensure that your packs will stay in peak shape during those long Cold months when it's hard to use them.”

1. In what state are your packs shipped? Is it 50% charged? They come with about half a charge in them.
2. When cycling the batteries in the winter months as suggested, what is the best way to discharge them safely and quickly?Use the disharge mode on the charger if it has one.
3. Is using a discharger like 12 volt autolamps safe and can it be done while connected to the Balancer? No it can't be done this way.
4. When using the Hyperion 0606i to discharge, can the auto cutoff be set or is it set at 20% to facilitate cycling? The charger will take the pack down to 3.0 volts per cell.
5. How do I know when the battery is discharged to the recommended 20% before charging back up to 50%? And, how do I know when the batt is at 50%?Use the battery once until the LVC point charge the pack upand see how much you put back in. Next time watch it and put only half of that in.
6. If I use the charger to discharge the battery at 1 amp, it should take approx how long to discharge to 20%?about 5 hours at one amp.

So, am I worring too much? Do I just plug the battery in, make sure the settings are correct and let it discharge untill lvc and then immediately charge back up to 50% and let it sit another month? It really doesn't matter how you do it. You can take a half charged pack and chrage it up then drain it then charge back to half. Or you can charge it all the way and drain to half.
