RE: Biplane kit needed.
One other option is to spring for one of the old Sterling PT-17 kits that are always popping up on Ebay. There are usually a couple listed every week or two--I see them all the time on there. Average selling price is around $150-$200. A 1.40 is likely a bit much for it, unless you are looking for some 'very spirited' performance.
The 77" span Ziroli PT-17 is the next closest size option, aside from the Midwest kit. IMHO this is probably the best match size-wise for the 1.40. The plan calls for a 35-42cc gas engine, and a finished weight of 16-20 lb.
I have the Great Planes PT-17 ARF, and it's a very nice flyer. I'd have much preferred a kit, but there isn't a lot to choose from for kits of this size any more. The Ziroli Stearman is offered as a short kit on his website.
