Reverse comes in quite handy if you want to back out of something instead of going and getting your car EVERY time.

Yes it's not legal for racing but like the guy said you can DISABLE it for racing and then ENABLE it for bashing.

I doubt this guy is racing on a huge level so why the big deal?
