This is a Google Earth screen capture of our field. Although I admit that our main field is large (3000' x 500') and is a full scale runway, a typical field needs three things:
1. It needs to have a runway ([X(]). As already mentioned, that runway should be a minimum length to safely take off and land our RC aircraft, especially the Glow and Gas among us.
2. It needs a fly over area that is out and away from the pilot's stand and, in ideal conditions, away from the runway so that pilots can land and take off while others are flying.
3. It needs a pit area for assembly and run up of models.
A parking area would be nice too..
Now with that said, the typical back yard just isn't gonna cut it, unless you have a huge back yard, a farm, or live on an airport.. but even at that, there are restrictions established by both the FAA and the AMA about flying RC in the vicinity of an active full scale airport. In our case, the property is owned by the Forestry people and they use it, but not frequently, so they allow us to fly there provided we get out of the way when one (or more) of their full scale aircraft is operating in the area.
As to how to land an RC aircraft? That too has been covered so I won't go into that.
Obviously, the general consensus is that you find a club and get an instructor, who will teach you what you need to know to safely fly your model. Don't forget, these things are often referred to as 'toy airplanes'. But, they are not toys. They can be dangerous in the wrong hands and can do damage to persons and property, even kill people. So, do yourself a favor and find a club and do it that way.
