Yes, I too have been in your shoes where my ESC and motor got hot with 2200mah 18c batteries, once I switched to 25c 2150 Kongs or DN powers the ESC and motor do not even get warm.

I do not think you wrecked things or otherwise you would see more definite signs of issues, motor not beeping, erratic HS from the ESC, etc.
