RE: Sig Four Star 60
Over the years I have had a number of Sig kits and they are really great and result in planes that fly really well. I was happily flying my Four Star 60 with its Saito 100 a couple of weeks ago when I noticed that I no longer had full throttle range available. I had from about half throttle to full throttle. I decided to run the fuel out and land dead stick. When the fuel finally did run out it was then that I found just how well the Four Star floats. I had deliberately stayed near the strip but with a bit of height and it took two nice slow small circuits to loose the height for a landing. It was probably the best landing I have ever had too. She just floated down like my Kadet Senior and sat down on all three wheels. Very pretty. The plane is not especially light as I covered it in Solatex for durability but all that wing area really does give a very floaty aircraft. The plane originally had a Saito 72 and it flew quite well with it but the 100 really does give it more vertical performance not that I know how to really use it. I just like the way it cruises round on half power but has plenty in reserve. A friend has one with an OS 91 Surpass also covered in Solatex. It is about 6 years old and still flying as well as ever. He flew it recently at a fly in when the weather was really horrible. It was so windy very few people would fly but the Four Star handled it really well. The landings were a little tricky though. The only mod I would make is to improve the UC. If the Four Star has a fault it is that it is an easy plane to bounce on landing and this takes a toll on the UC. The solution seems to be to "hold it off, hold it off, hold it off" just above the ground and let it sit down on three wheels. This can be difficult if it is windy though.
