a pull-start crankshaft typically has a little extension on the end of it that fits into the shaft on the backplate. That shaft then has the one-way bearing and the pull starter mechanism attached to it (on the outside of the backplate). I don't know about every engine, but on the ones I've seen converted, the little extension had to be cut off for the non-pullstart backplate to fit on.
