Ken,
I did the same with my Sealane that I am building to avoid kinking the fuel tubes and to move the balance a bit forward. I moved it 1/4" is there a general rule of thumb as to how far you can move it (of course, without taking into account CG issues)? I figure, if the mount is long enough and the firewall is strong enough, should it matter much?

That's a pretty good rule of thumb. You should be ok.
