Ntc3 Weak Diffs?
OK, I am on my 2nd season racing a NTC3. Last year between, real hard sweepers and from the occasional getting rubbed into a wall I went through 5 diff cases. I would either crack the center hole where the shock tower screws in or I would literally pull the screws out and almost separate it. I have run at least 10 gallons of fuel through this car ( 4 motors have been in it) I am going to rebuild the diffs for the first time this weekend. Only reason for this is one of the large diff bearings failed and debris from either the bearings or from where ever got in the diff case. So I why rebuild one when you can rebuild two. But getting back to the diff cases. I am not a fan of aluminum hop ups. these cars are heavy enough. I like the light plastic carbon crap we are custom to. so I was surfing ebay and found that guy who sells "The Fix" I was like, Man I can't believe how easy and cleaver it is. So I bought two. Man do they work. I have never had a diff case come apart again. No problems ever since then. As far as whose car is better? its what ever you are comfortable driving, Yeah new technology comes out daily, but every time you get a new car you have to learn how that car rides and what effects what. I race both electric and gas tc3's. I am just comfortable with them cause I know how to change what to effect something. You take a guy like Ralph Burch, Give him a old school 4-tec. He will still be just as good of a driver. If you can wheel a car well, it don't matter what you drive.
A recommendation to you guys that have smacked things hard enough that has broken diff cases. I can't tell you how many kids who have NTC3's and either lot bash them or smash them around a track have this problem. I see it over and over again.
Spin the wheels on your car. Does your drive shaft have a slight wobble to it? Think about this, you hit something head on, you have enough force to break the diff case, do you think it stops there? NO! You have a chance that you might have bent your drive shaft which at speed will create vibrations that could destroy bearings, effect handling and alter your motors tune. Now if your Drive shaft is bent. And even if its slight you still need to check the following. Spin your wheels, do you feel any resistance at all? if you do you need to pull your tranny apart, even if you don't if you have a bent shaft I recommend this. Another problem that occurs is you can collapse the tranny, and what I mean by this is you can bring the two spur gears closer together. What can happen is you can force the 2 speed clutch housing off its bearing and shim it back into the 2 speed one way hub and what this causes to happen is this. The 3 screws that hold each spur gear together will rub into one another. That would be the resistance or the binding that you would feel, But I recommend you check for this anyway because if this happens int he first minute of a race, and you continue on, you can very easily rub the screws away and it would not be as easy to notice.
But like I said. This is't the best car out there. Actually its yesterdays technology that allot of people are comfortable driving. Parts are cheap and real easy to get. I prefer to stick to what I know and what works.
