As you state in your original Post, you want an r/c Helicopter that is decent to fly right out of the box, that both yourself and your son can enjoy.
To get this vital taste for this hobby (and to see if you will enjoy it), I also suggest you buy a Coaxial helicopter as a first purchase - Such as a ' Blade CX2 '.
The Blade comes RTF (Ready To Fly), requiring you to only charge the battery at most, before you are able to get this Helicopter into the air !!
The Blade CX2 is reasonably cheap, and can be configured and upgraded (if you so choose) making it more fun and exciting to fly.
It is more suited to indoors (meaning you can fly it ANY time), however with a few modifications, can be flown outside in minimal wind.
You cant get better "practice" than by actually flying a Heli, as compared to practicing with simulator software, which will never give you that same experience!
