Although they're kinda pricey (about $50.00), You'll find all kinds of useful information about materials, threads, proportions, tools, math etc. in 'Machinery's Handbook', available from Enco tool and other places where machine tools are sold. I'm a Toolmaker and use it all the time, but there's a wealth of information useful to us as modelers, too.
